The models me and my group wanted for our shoot and video were people who gave off a vintage atheistic and had the hair, features and characteristics of what a typical 'northern souler' would look like. We also wanted a range of models so that images would come out looking more diverse and genuine.

we wanted the make-up on the models to be inspired by a very popular 60's/70's trend often worn by the fashion icon Twiggy and many other young girls at the time; it consisted of black liner taken up into the crease and filled in with bright colours.  We wanted to use bright colours such as blue, green and yellow. On the bottom lash we also decided we wanted to draw fake lashes on with black eyeliner. The hair was inspired by a popular northern soul hairstyle were the hair was long at the front and shaved at the back; we wanted to try and copy it as much as possible with our models length and style hair.

rationale

reason's why we decided to go for a very authentic 70's mod vibe: we wanted our photoshoot and video to represent northern soul and the music as much as possible we didn't want to do a lot of tweaking to the video and images.  Myself and my group defiantly wanted to give the project a little modern spin though just to add our own individuality and style to the piece to make it our own and to stand out.  Myself and my group were all very interested in the styling and photography of this project so that's why we decided to make those two a priority and really focus and research everything we could.

Promotional materials

Another promotional material I used was instagram. I built a seperate FMC instagram account and started to put my images and videos from the shoot. I also added my two promotional posters and I was starting to include some mood boards I have produced from this module.

Here are two of my promotional posters I made for university exhibition at the Kommune on the 7th of May. Both of these posters include me and my groups own photos with my editing and photoshop on top.

location

Me and my group decide we wanted to use a couple of locations for our shoot/video: chip shop working mans club  pub  record store  thrift shop  After doing research on northern soul we came to common ground with what were theme appropriate places to shoot; records were a huge part of the northern soul culture and many would travel to record stores to find new and exciting soul tracks. A working mans club is where the soul music would be played and enjoyed by many dancing through the night, we wanted to use this backdrop to take some movement/dancing shots; instead we used the pub and thrift store. one of the venues we contacted and decided to use

When we were going to take the images we wanted to take into account all different aspects such as:  lighting positions of the models position of the camera location/background  long-shot/wide-shot portrait/landscape  For some of the images me and my group wanted the lighting to be bright and light so the images would develop clear enough to edit and filter without it looking too grainy or blurry.  And for some of the images we wanted to capture the essence of northern soul music and the dancing in the clubs so we took some dancing/blur shots to create a movement effect.  We wanted to use props that incorporated in our theme such as vintage sofas, mirrors, old phone box's, northern soul signs and records.

Concept

The aim behind this northern soul themed video and chosen photograph was to try and make it as authentic as possible.   Me and my team researched in depth into the fashion around the time of northern soul (which was bits of 60's/70's/80's)  we looked into the prominent brands that were occurring, the music that was being played and the trends that were being set.  Our concept for the 60 second video was what a typical night in Sheffield would of been like if you were into northern soul in the 70's.  We wanted to start off in the record store putting on a record and jiving to music in the store. We would then proceed into town after taking some 'drugs' and ending up in a typical northern club where the dancing was extravagant and sweaty and the music was loud. We concluded the night by looking worn out in a chip-shop eating chips. hire clothes from a retro shop  use brands such as Doc Martens and Fred Perry  The main ai

Styling

“Early fashion nodded to a classic mod style, but as the dancing got faster and the hours in the club longer, the burgeoning style tribe needed to carve its own identity”   I  researched into mod fashion, 60's/70's fashion and what northern soul fashion in Sheffield looked like.  Certain prominent brands that were worn: - Fred Perry - Doc Martens, -Farrah -Levi's - Ray Bans.   I also took a lot of inspiration from the film 'Northern Soul (2014)' directed by Elaine Constantine which introduces us to the style of northern soul and how it originated from American soul rising up in the 1970's.  Northern soul movement originated from America and more specifically black soul music. They didn't just try to copy their style of music but also their style in dancing and fashion.  Items such as the dapper, jazzy suit and braces and brogues were defiantly slithering into the northern towns of England.  The mod scene slowly started to branch off from Amer
